Recueil d'estampes représentant les différents évènemens de la Guerre qui a procuré l'Indépendence aux Etats unis de l'Amérique. Paris: Ponce and Godefroy [1784].

First edition, with an autograph letter signed from John Burgoyne to Friedrich Reidesel, dated 9 November 1776. This rare suite illustrates the main events of the American Revolution through French eyes, including the tarring and feathering of British customs official John Malcolm, the Battle of Lexington, Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, the attack of French forces on the island of Dominica, the surrender of Senegal, the capture of Grenada, the capture of Pensacola, the capture of Tobago and the surrender of Cornwallis. Two maps show the newly-formed United States and four territories ceded by Britain to France after the war, and a series of vignettes commemorates the Treaty of Versailles in 1783. This edition is often cited as the first French book with a title-page mentioning the United States. Cohen de Ricci 862 (with erroneous collation); Howes C-576; Sabin 68421; Winsor VI, 185n.

Bound into this copy is a letter from General Burgoyne (1722–1792) to General Reidesel (1738–1800) written in French on board HMS Isis. Burgoyne confirms that he delivered a letter to a Lieutenant Colonel on Reidesel’s behalf and references Reidesel’s wife, Frederika Charlotte.

Oblong folio (398 × 265mm). 16 engraved plates including title-page and two maps plus additional states of pl.10 & 11 laid in, ALS from John Burgoyne to Friedrich Reidesel dated 9 November 1776 tipped in (light dustsoiling, few small stains). Contemporary red morocco by Riviere & Son, covers ruled in gold, spine lettered in gold with gold-tooled compartments, top edge gilt, dentelles in gold on turn-ins, marbled endleaves (rebacked, corners rubbed and bumped, spine and covers’ edges toned, front free endpaper loose).
