A fine and extremely rare series of mixed bouquets by Redouté, unrecorded in the standard bibliographies, and bound with an original signed watercolour on vellum. We have only been able to trace two other portions of this work at auction: a copy containing 54 (only, of 60) plates in original wrappers, but without a title-page, sold in 1999 at Christie’s and again in 2004 at Bonhams; and a second copy, containing the title and 12 plates only sold at Normandy Auction, France, in 2020. The copy with original printed wrappers indicated that the publisher intended to produce some 6-8 parts (‘Cahiers’), each with 12 plates. However, the wrapper to part 3 indicated that only 5 parts, each of 12 plates, were to be published. The vast majority of Redouté’s illustrations were printed using engraved plates, and there is little information available on Redouté’s lithographs. These plates were produced either late in the artist's career (as here) or after his death, and the title implies that Redouté produced a series of original compositions for publication as lithographs. Given Redouté's precarious financial position, it would not be surprising to find that he had been commissioned by Schroth; it is certain that the present images are not copies of earlier prints.
The only other lithographic work by Redouté that we can trace at auction is a lot consisting of 12 plates without title or wrappers (folio, hand-coloured, undated), showing various members of a single genera (Christie’s, 11 November 1998, lot 93). The bibliographies only mention the following: 6 plates (quarto, uncoloured, 1835), titled Receuil de six beaux bouquets (Hunt Redoutéana 46; Great Flower Books [1990] p.129); 12 plates (quarto, coloured or uncoloured, circa 1835), titled Reunion de Douze Planches de Fleurs (Hunt Redoutéana 47; Great Flower Books [1990] p.129). In addition a series of 12 plates (folio, hand-coloured, no date) titled Les Mois is also recorded (Great Flower Books [1990] p.129). The present work is an important addition to Redouté's canon of work, and a fine example of the work of this master of the botanical illustration.
We have not been able to trace a published form of the mounted watercolour study, which appears to depict pink Freesias and yellow St. John’s Wort (although the leaves do not seem to correspond).
One part only (most probably part 4, of a possible total of 5), small folio (340 x 250mm). Original pencil and watercolour drawing (114 x 175mm) on vellum by Redouté, signed in pencil ‘P.J. Redouté’ to lower-left, window mounted within front doublure, 12 numbered hand-coloured lithographic plates after Redouté, by Pointel du Portail and printed by Villain on paper with ‘C.S.’[chroth] blindstamp in lower margin, in the following order: no. 37 Eglantiers, Oenotera et Lobélia, no. 38 Iris et Gorteria, no. 39 Azalea et Chrysanthème, no. 40 Metrosideros, Anémone double, no. 41 Gordonia, Campanule et Benoit jaune, no. 42 Passiflore, Chrysanthème et Lin, no. 43 Giroflée et Arctotis, no. 44 Iris, Anémone et Géranium, no. 45 Mauve et Ixia, no. 46 Oeillet et Oranger Pompoleon, no. 47 Pivoine, Renoncule et Géranium, and no. 48 Hemerocalle et Petunia (pl. 38 with very minor marking at extremities of head and gutter, very faint stain on verso of pls. 41 and 43). Modern red morocco bound by The Studio Bindery, sides with gilt borders, that of upper cover enclosing grey-blue morocco gilt lettering piece within gilt-tooled frame, gilt spine with raised bands in 6 compartments, purple silk doublures, wide gilt turn-ins, marbled free endpapers, gilt edges.
