Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Autograph manuscript signed ('R. Wagner'), a revision for the programme for the first concert performances of Götterdämmerung, quoting 18 lines from the libretto of 'Hagen's Watch' from Act I, [c. April 1875]
In German. Three pages, 218 x 141mm, bifolium. Provenance: Hartung und Hartung, 13-15 May 2003, lot 2525.

An adaptation of the libretto of Götterdämmerung for the earliest concert performances in Vienna in spring 1875. Wagner's commentary in the printed programme for the concerts sets the scene for each of the four excerpts from the opera: here he rewrites the section relating to the second excerpt, 'Hagens Wacht' ('Hagen's Watch'): 'This fragment of the first act begins with Siegfried and Gunther setting off for Brünnhild's Crag. Gutrune looks after Siegfried with delight as he runs away ...'. Wagner quotes the 18 lines of Hagen's aria, beginning 'Hier sitz' ich zur Wacht', before describing the curtain falling, and the orchestral interlude leading to the scene of Brünnhilde contemplating Siegfried's ring. He notes that the texts for the other three excerpts (the overture, Siegfried's death and the closing scene) are to remain as before. An autograph note on p.3 of the manuscript gives instructions for its delivery: 'As quickly as possible! The above is to be inserted into the old programme as no.2. 1500 copies are to be sent to Dr. J[osef] Standthartner in Vienna as quickly as possible: the concert will take place on 2 May. Please do everything you can'.

Wagner's programmatic notes are published in the Sämtliche Schriften, 16, 173-4. Wagner's concert performances of excerpts from Götterdämmerung at the Musikverein in Vienna constituted the first public performances of any portion of the opera: the present manuscript is evidently a revision to the programme notes produced for the first of the concerts on 25 March. Götterdämmerung was first performed in full at Bayreuth on 17 August 1876.
