VERLAINE, Paul (1844-1896)
Epigrammes. Paris: Bibliothèque Artistique & Littéraire, 1894.
Presentation copy of the first edition, inscribed by Verlaine to his friend the English poet Arthur Symons: number 8 of 20 copies on Japan. Symons was a great promoter of Verlaine in England and a translator of his work. His third collection of poems, London Nights, published a year after this work, in 1895, was itself dedicated to Verlaine. His first volume of verse, Days and Nights (1889), consisted of dramatic monologues, though his later verse was heavily influenced by a close study of modern French writers, of Charles Baudelaire, and especially of Paul Verlaine. Symons contributed poems and essays to The Yellow Book, including an important piece which was later expanded into The Symbolist Movement in Literature, which would have a major influence on William Butler Yeats and T. S. Eliot. His major editorial feat was his work with the short-lived Savoy magazine. Verlaine visited Symons in England, staying with him at the Temple and Verlaine later dedicated his poem, ‘Fountain Court’, to Symons which was published in the enlarged edition of Dédicaces, the following year. Carteret, II, 433; Vicaire, VII, 999.

Octavo (184x 130mm). Frontispiece by F.-A. Cazals, title printed in red and black (marginal age toning). Three quarter burgundy morocco over marbled boards by Devauchelle, spine with raised bands, top edge gilt, wrappers bound in (wrappers browned and slightly soiled, spine a little sunned, upper joint slightly rubbed). Provenance: Arthur Symons (1865-1945; inscribed by the author on half-title: ‘à Arthur Symons, bien cordialement P. Verlaine’.) — Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
