First octavo edition of ‘the most complete and accurate account of the nervous system which had hitherto appeared, and the work that coined the term "neurology"’ (Garrison-Morton). 'In its preparation Willis was helped by his students Richard Lower and Thomas Millington, and its illustrations are by the architect, Sir Christopher Wren, making this one of the earliest scientific collaborations in England'. It remained authorative for the study of the brain and neuroanatomy until the nineteenth century. This work ‘was issued in both a quarto and an octavo edition, the quarto edition appearing a few weeks before the cheaper octavo edition. The copperplates were engraved with the pagination of the quarto edition, which was corrected in manuscript for the octavo publication' (Norman). ESTC R24571; cf. Octavo (147 x 95mm). Imprimataur leaf, 15 folding engraved plates by Sir Christopher Wren and others, additional letterpress leaf between pages 56 and 57 (‘Pag. 56’ with signature ‘*’) with text to accompanying plate (plates 9-13 with clean tears without loss, dust stain to lower corner of title, upper hinge starting, preliminary blanks and ‘Imprimataur’ becoming loose and slightly frayed at edges). Contemporary vellum (slightly marked and dust-stained, spine darkened). Provenance: Edward Poole (early signature on title ‘E. Poole’ and preliminary blank ‘Edwd. Pool’) — Dr Owen Pritchard (1854-1928, his bookplate, by whom gifted to:) — Royal Society of Medicine in March 1919 (bookplate recording the gift to the library, and library inkstamps on verso of Imprimataur and title, and blank at end).
