Cerebri anatome: cui accessit nervorum descriptio et usus· Studio Thomæ Willis. London: Tho. Roycroft for for J. Martyn & Ja. Allestry, 1664.
First octavo edition of ‘the most complete and accurate account of the nervous system which had hitherto appeared, and the work that coined the term "neurology"’ (Garrison-Morton). 'In its preparation Willis was helped by his students Richard Lower and Thomas Millington, and its illustrations are by the architect, Sir Christopher Wren, making this one of the earliest scientific collaborations in England'. It remained authorative for the study of the brain and neuroanatomy until the nineteenth century. This work ‘was issued in both a quarto and an octavo edition, the quarto edition appearing a few weeks before the cheaper octavo edition. The copperplates were engraved with the pagination of the quarto edition, which was corrected in manuscript for the octavo publication' (Norman). ESTC R24571; cf. Garrison-Morton 1378 (quarto edition); Krivatsy 13010; Russell 868; Waller 10314; Osier 4249; cf. Norman 2243 (first quarto edition).
