Lot 190 | A signed four-language ship's paper
Valeur estimée
$ 600 – 900
JACKSON, Andrew (1767 - 1845). Partly-printed document signed ("Andrew Jackson") as President, Washington D.C., 17 September 1833.

One page, 520 x 405mm (fully separated at the folds with a few edge separations, all repaired with tape on the verso, lightly toned at top edge, chipped at lower-left corner.)

A signed, four-language ship's paper issued to Obed Shearman, master of the ship Marcus, a whaler bound for the Pacific. Notably, it's likely that this shipmaster Obed Shearman "re-discovered" a now-vital island in the Pacific, and christened that land "Marcus Island" after this vessel. This coral atoll is officially known today as Minamitorishima (though "Marcus Island" is still commonly used). It is the easternmost territory belonging to Japan.

Though this island was found by numerous other vessels and charted by mapmakers in the decades prior to this, European charts began referring to the land as "Marcus Island" beginning in the late-1800s. Without reliable evidence proving the exact origin of the name, scholars generally believe that Shearman discovered and named the island in 1839—five years after this ship's passport was issued. (Lévesque, Rodrigue. “The Odyssey of Captain Arriola and His Discovery of Marcus Island in 1694.” The Journal of Pacific History, vol. 32, no. 2, 1997, pp. 229–33.)
