Further details

JAMES POLLARD (1755-1838), THE BIRMINGHAM TALLY-HO! COACHES PASSING THE CROWN INN, HOLLOWAY, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND DATED

The present painting is one of the finest examples of the richly detailed work of James Pollard (1792-1867), who was renowned for his depictions of horses, hounds and stage coaches. Painted in 1826, the main subject of the painting is the Tally-Ho coach, which left the Saracen's Head Inn in London's Holborn every day at 7.45 am to arrive eleven hours later at the Swan Hotel in Birmingham. The use of the stage coaches gradually declined between 1830 and 1850, supplanted by the railway, so Pollard's paintings soon became a symbol of a lost picturesque past.
