Post lot text JEAN-BAPTISTE GREUZE, THE MARCH OF SILENUS, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN AND BLACK INK, GREY WASHUnpublished, this large sheet by Jean-Baptiste Greuze in a graphic technique is absolutely common to the artist’s oeuvre, having probably kept its original blue-green wash mounting. The drawing constitutes an interesting rediscovery in more than one respect, particularly in terms of iconography. The painter of emotions, who excelled in genre painting, completed a limited amount of works on mythological subjects. Apart from the present March of Silenus and a few Venuses, Psyches and groups of Lovers, we should note Le Délire de Silène mentioned by Martin and Masson in their catalogue raisonné published in 1908 under number 50, is listed as a 'composition de concours'. In this sheet, Greuze's typical graphic style combines brown and black ink with grey wash to skillfully place light and shade over a light black stone sketch. The drawing can be compared to The Departure of the Young Savoyard, a drawing in the Historisch Museum in Amsterdam dated 1750-1760 (Greuze the Draftsman, by E. Munhall, cat. exp., New York, The Frick Collection, Los Angeles, The J. Paul Getty Museum, 2002, no. 56)The rediscovery of this large, accomplished composition completes the graphic body of Greuze’s work work, and its importance is further justified by its prestigious provenance. The work belonged to the painter, engraver and collector, Baron Charles de Vèze, and later to François Hippolyte Waferdin, a great amateur d’art, who bequeathed his collection of 80 paintings to the Louvre Museum. His 1860 sale in which the March of Silenus was presented at auction included no less than fourteen drawings by Greuze.
