GERMAN SCHOOL FIRST HALF 15th CENTURY, CHRIST ON THE CROSS WITH SAINT JUDOC, THE VIRGIN, SAINT JOHN AND SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA, TEMPERA AND OIL ON GOLD GROUND CANVAIS LAID DOWN ON A DOUBLE-SIDED PANEL, INSCRIBED

This Crucifixion set in an enclosed interior is an interesting variation on traditional representations of the Passion of Christ. Unlike open-air crucifixion scenes, often set on Golgotha, this iconographic choice of the interior as the sanctuary of faith gives the event an intimate, sacred and symbolically rich setting. Although less common, this approach can be found in certain works from the late Middle Ages, such as on a leaf from the Codex Schürrstab (Zentralbibliothek, Zurich, Ms. C 54), an astrological manuscript produced around 1472 in Nuremberg, which depicts similar bichrome tiling.

The style of the figures in our Crucifixion shows the influence of the Cologne School of painting. The schematic rendering of the faces, particularly those of Christ and Saint Catherine of Alexandria, as well as the particular shade of green in Saint John's drapery, are distinctive elements that can also be seen in the History of Salvation triptych from the collection of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf (1748-1824), which is attributed to the Cologne School circa 1340-1350 and is now in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne (inv. no. WRM 0001).
