Further details

ANTWERP SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY, EIGHT PREPARATORY STUDIES FOR THE BOOK LINGUAE VITAE ET REMEDIA PUBLISHED IN ANTWERP IN 1631 BY ANTOINE DE BOURGOGNE, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, NUMBERED AND TITLED

These eight drawings are preparatory works for the book of Emblems Linguæ vitæ et remedia by Antoine de Bourgogne (1593-1657), known as the ‘Great Bastard of Burgundy’, published in Antwerp in 1631 and translated into French by Pierre Martin (Antoine de Bourgogne: Les vices de la langue et leurs remèdes, Jouy-en-Josas, 1999). The oblong Latin work opens with a frontispiece and consists of 94 emblems, accompanied by a versified maxim, occupying 191 pages. As the title of the collection indicates, these emblems deal with linguistic errors, such as the misuse of speech (unbridled, talkative, corrupt language, etc.) and the solutions recommended. The emblems are traditionally made up of three parts: a title, a short text and an image for which the present drawings are preparatory. In addition to the eight vignettes presented here, 36 sheets are kept at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (inv. PD.61-1964-PD.98-1964), all of which were intended for the illustration of this book.

As for the authorship of these works, the names of Jacob Neefs (1610-after 1660) and Andries Pauwels (1600-1639) have been mentioned for the engravings after drawings by Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-1675), an attribution refuted by Saskia van Altena, the specialist on the artist, though the drawings in the Fiztwilliam Museum are still classified under his name. An alternative attribution to Pieter de Jode (1570-1634) has been suggested by several art historians (oral communication). In any case, the drawings belong to a highly creative Antwerp artist, active around 1630. The many variations between the drawings and the engravings show that these small, highly inventive sketches, with their varied and innovative compositions, were indeed preparatory work for the engraver, with numerous annotations for his attention.
