A GEORGE II PARCEL-GILT AND GREY-PAINTED ARMCHAIR

DESIGNED BY JOHN VARDY AND ALMOST CERTAINLY SUPPLIED BY JOHN GORDON, CIRCA 1758

The cartouche-shaped back upholstered à chassis, the molded frame carved with scrolling foliage, centered by a foliate spray to the cresting and by ribbon-tied palm fronds to the base, the padded armrests carved with flowerheads to each side at the back and to the molded scrolled terminals, on palm-leaf and husk-carved arm-supports, the serpentine padded seat centered to front and sides by carved palmettes above cornucopiae issuing acanthus and husks, on palm-carved cabriole legs with ribbed tree trunks issuing fronds, with foliate-scrolled toes on oval gadrooned pads concealing castors, re-decorated, with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

41 1/2 in. (105.5 cm.) high, 29 in. (73.5 cm.) wide, 29 3/4 in. (75.5 cm.) deep





Provenance

Supplied to John Spencer, later 1st Earl Spencer (1734-1783) for the Palm Room Spencer House, St. James's, London, as part of a large suite of seat furniture.

Thence by descent to his son, George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1734-1834) who removed the suite from the Palm Room during Henry Holland's renovations, circa 1788-96, and by descent until sold.

Acquired by the Earls of Harrington at an unknown date, and latterly at Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire.

Acquired by Ann and Gordon Getty from the above.
