A New Voyage to Carolina; containing the Exact Description and Natural History of that Country: together with the Present State thereof. And a Journal of a Thousand Miles, Travel'd thro' several Nations of Indians. Giving a particular Account of their Customes, Manners, etc. London: Printed in the Year 1709. First edition of "the first history of Carolina, with a very observant report of the life, customs, and natural history of the colony" (Streeter). The author, John Lawson, was the surveyor-general of the Carolina colony, traveling extensively in the region and promoting European settlement there. His role in the European encroachment onto Native lands led to his death at the hands of the Tuscarora in 1711, one of the opening acts of the Tuscarora War—North Carolina's bloodiest conflict in the Colonial period. Folding map and one engraved plate, advertisement leaf at end (map extended at the margins and backed with silk with large repaired tears, title page extended at top margin, toned, a few spots). 19th-century red morocco by W. Pratt, edges gilt (light wear to joints, rear flyleaf detached and front flyleaf reinserted).
