The arms are those of Amory quartering Heathcoat impaling Unwin, for Sir John Heathcoat-Amory, 1st Bt. (1829-1914) and his wife Henrietta-Maria Unwin, daughter of William Unwin, whom he married in 1863. He was M.P. for Tiverton between 1868 and 1885 and was Deputy Lieutenant of Devon. He gained the rank of Major in the 1st Devon Royal Volunteers. In 1874 his name was changed by Royal License to John Heathcoat-Amory; the same year he was created a baronet. The family’s wealth was based on lace manufacturing which they established in Tiverton in the 19th century. Sir John employed the Gothic Revival architect William Burgess (1827-1881) to rebuild the family seat Knightshayes Court. The house is now owned by the National Trust.
