A STRATI 3D PRINTED CAR
LOCAL MOTORS, 2014
A vehicle with 3D printed chassis and body panels and digital tablet display, together with two 3D printed steps.

A groundbreaking showcase of additive manufacturing in the automotive industry.

The Strati 3D-printed car, unveiled by Local Motors in 2014, features a chassis and body panels produced using a large-scale 3D printer. The model exemplifies the innovative and creative capabilities of automotive design and manufacturing processes, showcasing the potential of 3D printing technology to revolutionize the industry.

Local Motors, an Arizona-based company known for its innovative approach to automotive design, introduced the Strati at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago. Developed through significant industry collaboration, the design for the model was ultimately selected through a global competition, Michele Anoè's concept being chosen from numerous submissions. This crowdsourced approach not only democratized the design process but also accelerated innovation by leveraging diverse perspectives and expertise from around the world – the result of a dynamic and unique design that stands to streamline the industry.

Unlike traditional automobiles, which are assembled from thousands of parts sourced from various suppliers, the Strati is composed of a mere 49 parts. This drastic reduction in component count is made possible by the 3D printing process, which allows for the integration of complex structures and systems into single, unified pieces. The car is printed using a carbon-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic, materials with strength and lightweight characteristics, essential for vehicle performance and efficiency. The printing process itself took approximately 44 hours, followed by a few days of milling and assembly. This rapid production cycle contrasts sharply with the lengthy timelines required for traditional automotive manufacturing, highlighting 3D printing's potential to drastically reduce time-to-market for new vehicle designs. Environmentally, the efficiency of 3D printing can contribute to more sustainable manufacturing practices by optimizing resource use and potentially enabling localized production, which reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation and logistics.

Indeed, the 2014 Strati 3D-printed car represents a seminal moment in the evolution of automotive manufacturing. Its production underscores the transformative potential of 3D printing and showcases both the technical feasibility of producing functional vehicles using 3D printing and also sets a precedent for future advancements in the automotive industry, highlighting a path toward more sustainable, efficient, and customizable manufacturing practices.
