Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia was founded in 2005 to protect and promote the prestige of Italian winemakers who, for at least 20 years, have been producing high class wines that are widely acclaimed by wine critics and on the market. This was motivated by the absence in Italy of a law like the one in France, where classification of the «Grandi Cru» was established in law by Napoleon III on the occasion of the Paris Exposition of 1855.
In order to be eligible for inclusion among the Grandi Cru d’Italia, winemakers are selected on the basis of strict quality criteria, certified in the ratings assigned by the most authoritative wine guides and magazines, also taking into account the history and traditions of each one within the winemaking sector to ensure they have achieved a high degree of reliability in the production of top quality wines. The list includes the inner circle of the most prestigious winemakers in the country, representatives of the highest capacity of expression of the cultural and qualitative values of the territories with the most marked vocation for producing great wines.
The 10 promoting and founding members, at the apex of Italian oenology on the basis of the scrupulous integration of the leading Italian and international guides, have nominated additional founding members, and ordinary members.
As an open list both for entry and exit, the Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia members are updated periodically by the association on the basis of the latest ratings, and on the request of producers themselves who, nevertheless, must satisfy all the necessary characteristics stipulated in the statute for admission: at least 20 years of production and achievement of the highest quality standards according to the most authoritative guides and magazines. Currently there are almost 100 wineries entitled to use the Grandi Cru d’Italia qualification.
Christie’s Wine & Spirits Department are delighted to be offering finest and rarest Italian wines direct from the cellars of members of the Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia. Following the success of the first sale in London in 2018 Christie’s are thrilled to be working again with the Comitato and their members. The Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia organisation was established in 2005 and has a strict criterion of excellence in order to be included amongst the membership.
I can certainly vouch for the outstanding quality of the wines from these selected renowned Italian producers. There are many highlights in the sale, from rare large formats of Turriga from Sardinia’s Argiolas, to large formats of Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany’s Altesino, exclusive vertical collections of Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe from Piemonte’s Cavallotto, rare double-magnums of Brunello di Montalcino from Col d'Orcia, outstanding 1990 Sodi di San Nicolo from Castellare di Castellina, a vertical of single-vineyard “Ripe al Convento” Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from CastelGiocondo back to 1990, the new and exclusive release of the stunning Ornellaia 2017 “Solare” including a rare six-litre bottle, and double magnums of the superb 100% Merlot “Super-Tuscan” Baffonero 2015 from Rocca di Frassinello,
These wines have been released specifically for this auction from the cellars of the Estates in Italy and delivered to our professional storage warehouse in the U.K. This sale presents an opportunity to acquire superlative wines that have been maturing gracefully in the optimum conditions of their cellars. Combining ex-cellar provenance, the fantastic reputation of these Italian Estates and the extremely high quality of the wines on offer, these lots are sure to delight those lucky enough to acquire these rare Italian gems.
Christie’s would like to sincerely thank the Italian Estates, Argiolas, Altesino, Castellare di Castellina, Rocca di Frassinello, Cavallotto, Col d’Orcia, Frescobaldi and Ornellaia for their participation in the auction and the Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia for their assistance in organising this sale. Grazie mille!

ALTESINO
Set amongst the north eastern hills of Montalcino the imposing structure of the 15th century Palazzo Altesi overlooks the estate. Built by the Tuscan family Tricerchi, whose marble crest can still be seen set over the old oak entrance door, since 2002 Altesino has been owned by the Gnudi Angelini family.
As a forerunner in the pursuit of excellence, with the introduction of the “Cru” (Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli) concept in 1975, Altesino was the first winery to use barriques in 1979. Over the last forty years an intense relationship has been developed with the land full of history, with its almost sensual beauty that is physically perceived and its subtle charm that reaches the body and soul. This is the philosophy that inspires Altesino to produce wine and maintain its culture.
THE ESTATE
On a total area of about 100 hectares, half of which are planted with vineyards (50 hectares), extend the six plots that make up the company’s productive heart. One parcel in the north – Altesino, one in the north east Macina, two in the north west; Cerbaia and Montosoli (first Cru in the history of Brunello di Montalcino and always famous for the production of wines of extreme elegance), one in the area of Sant’Angelo in colle – Pianezzine and finally one in Castelnuovo dell’Abate – Velona.
In addition to Sangiovese, which constitutes the majority of the vines (used for the production of Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and Palazzo Altesi), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are cultivated (which blend with Sangiovese for Alte d’Altesi and Rosso di Toscana), Trebbiano and Malvasia (for Vin Santo), Vermentino, Chardonnay and Viognier are destined for the production of Bianco di Altesino. Despite some technical changes over the course of time, the stylistic imprint remains oriented towards the elegance and austerity of a classic Brunello for ageing.
The company’s philosophy has always been to create high quality wines and this is why so much attention is devoted to every single detail, not only at each stage of production, but also to marketing, communications and image.
