AN ELIZABETH I SILVER-GILT TANKARD
MAKER'S MARK IR, QUATREFOIL BELOW, IN SHIELD-SHAPED CARTOUCHE, LONDON, 1602
The tapering cylindrical body on domed foot chased with a band of fruit and strapwork on a matted ground, the body flat-chased and engraved with three bands of strapwork and scrolls on a matted ground between an applied die-rolled strapwork band and an applied wrigglework band above, the central chased band applied with three busts amid foliate scrolls spaced by three engraved escutcheons, one pricked G RC, another GR GIV, the tubular scroll handle engraved with a band of arabesques, the hinged domed cover chased with conforming decoration within a dentilated borders, with cast winged mermaid-form thumbpiece, surmounted by a baluster knop issuing from a radiating fluted flange, the base later engraved with a presentation inscription and coat-of-arms, fully marked on base and cover

The arms are those of Rogers quartering others with Newman in pretence for the Rev. James Rogers of Rainscombe (1755-1831), Rector of Heddington and his wife Catherine (d.1832), youngest daughter and co-heir of Francis Newman of Cadbury House Somerset, whom he married in 1788.
The inscription on the base reads: The gift of James Rogers DD Rector of Headington Co. Wilts. who with his ancestors for many generations have been Patrons and Rectors of this Church. This sacramental Cup is consigned with Pious reverence to the service of the Altar for ever as a testimony of his regard to the Parish with a sincere hope that the sacred element it shall enclose may virtually convey to the humble communicants (may they abound!) from generation to generation. spiritual grace here they sure Pledge of eternal happinss hereafter, 24th June 1830. The 30th year of his Incumbency.
