Further details

A TERRACOTTA GROUP REPRESENTING ANACREON AND CUPID, BY BERNARD LANGE (1754-1839), CIRCA 1810-1820

Anacreon was a Greek lyric poet and author of the Anacreontic Odes, known for his love of wine and music. Dressed in a toga and grapevines, the poet holds Love on his lap, who is characterised by his wings and his bow and quiver. Stanislas Lami mentions a marble group of Anacreon and Love created in 1814 by Bernard Lange. The sculpture presented here could be a presentation model.
Bernard Lange (1754-1839) was born in Toulouse, where he studied at the Académie de peinture, sculpture et architecture under François Lucas (1736-1813). From 1777 to 1793 he lived in Rome, where he immersed himself in classical culture and ancient works. By 1793, he was living in Florence, in a precarious situation. He returned to France in 1797 and exhibited in Paris for the first time in 1799. The bulk of Lange’s activities centred on the restoration of Italian works – spoils of war from Napoleon’s campaigns in Italy – which were flooding in, badly damaged by transport. In 1810, he was appointed restorer of antique sculpture in the Musée Napoléon.
