ANGELICA KAUFFMANN, RA, AMELIA AND CELADON, OIL ON COPPER, OVAL

Like Palemon and Lavinia, the origins of the lovers Amelia and Celadon can be found in Thompson's The Seasons. Taken from the second part of the work, The Summer, they are Arcadian shepherds, an example of faithful and virtuous love. In a summer storm, Amelia is struck by lightning and dies in the arms of her lover. The romantic elements of this story, the fiery lightning against the dark clouds, the wind tearing at the young couple's clothes, the distress of Celadon and the supple, lifeless body of the beautiful Amelia, inspired many artists to depict this subject. We find further examples in the work of Richard Wilson (1714-1782) and Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), amongst many others. Kauffmann herself painted at least two pictures of the ill-fated lovers, this one and another showing the couple before Amelia's death. We know of the latter from an engraving by Bernard Siegrist (active in the late 18th century) dated 1791.

For more information on this painting, see the note for the preceding lot.

We would like to thank Dr. Bettina Baumgärtel for confirming the attribution to Angelica Kauffmann based on a first-hand inspection of the work, which she plans to include in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist.
