APULEIUS Madaurensis, Lucius (b. c.123) - HERMES Trismegistus. - ALBINUS (fl.2nd century)
Opera. Edited by Johannes Andreas de Bussis, bishop of Aleria (1417-1475) - HERMES Trismegistus. Asclepius. Translated by Apuleius - ALBINUS (fl. 2nd century). Epitome disciplinarum Platonis. Translated by Petrus Balbus (d.1479). Vicenza: Henricus de Sancto Ursio, Zenus (Rigo di ca Zeno), 9 August 1488.
Second edition of these works central to Renaissance Platonism. The works of Apuleius ('Apuleius the Platonist', as St. Augustine called him), are concerned with magic, transformation and antiquity. They are accompanied by the Asclepius of Hermes Trismegistus, since Apuleius was considered its translator. It was the only philosophical Hermetic work known in the West in the Middle Ages. The Epitome of Albinus (owing to a misreading also ascribed to 'Alcinous', as in this edition) is a handbook of platonic philosophy compiled for the general reader. Cardinal Bessarion, much praised here by Bussi in his dedicatory letter, listed these works in his defence of Platonism, Adversus Platonis calumniatorem. as necessary to a full comprehension of platonic philosophy. Median folio (309 x 200mm). 175 (of 178) leaves (lacking penultimate leaf with the register and without first and final blank). Roman and Greek type, 3- to 8-line initial spaces with printed guide-letter, manuscript marginal note on a1, printer's device at end (occasional light spotting, a little worming in first and final few leaves (with repairs) and elsewhere affecting a few letters). 18th-century mottled calf, spine in six compartments with raised bands gilt, lettering pieces in two compartments, the others richly gilt, marbled endpapers (minor scuff marks, extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: Doria family, counts of Montaldeo, engraved armorial bookplates of ‘Johannis Caroli de Auria ex comitibus Montis Aldei’ and ‘Georgij et Ambrosii de Auria, marchionum Montis Aldei’ – by descent.
