Further details
ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN-BAPTISTE GREUZE (1725-1805), THE UNMADE BED, OIL ON PANEL, UNFRAMED
The moralizing image of the painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) and his innocent young girls praying conceals a less chaste side of his production. The artist, praised by the philosopher Diderot (1713-1784) as a 'preacher of good morals', in contrast to Pierre-Antoine Baudouin (1723-1769), a 'preacher of bad ones' (quoted in G. Faroult, L’Amour peintre, Paris, 2020, p. 295), was nevertheless not without a certain mischievousness and a pronounced taste for sensual painting.
Some of his ostensibly decent scenes contain thinly veiled subtexts, metaphors of lost innocence such as The Broken Pitcher (Louvre Museum, Paris, inv. 5036) or The Broken Mirror (Wallace Collection, London, inv. P442). Other genre scenes reveal a more subtle ambiguity, expressed in a tone less sternly moralizing. The Young Girl with Doves, a brown wash drawing (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Paris, inv. Ph 24639), for instance, depicts a young woman lost in a dreamlike, openly sensual reverie. The background, filled with doves in mating season, guides interpretation for those who might otherwise miss the rapturous expression of the young woman.
The depiction of an unmade bed with no occupant, however, takes the erotic suggestion even further. The emptiness of the scene, devoid of explicit symbolic cues, leaves the viewer alone to imagine what has just transpired. Yet this simplicity of composition makes the subject all the more uncommon. Few artists have granted the bed itself the leading role. Fragonard (1732-1806), in his famous Le Verrou (Louvre Museum, Paris, inv. RF 1974 2), relegates the disheveled bed to the background to foreshadow the consummation of an imminent embrace. Baudouin and Hogarth (1697-1764) likewise take pleasure in depicting lively beds, from rustic pallets to elaborate canopies, but their occupants are never far away. Even a drawing by Fragonard in the Musée de Besançon (inv. D.2940) that features a sumptuous, unmade canopy bed distances itself from reality through the presence of two winged cupids in the corner.
Here, by contrast, the direct simplicity of the depiction strikes the viewer. A freedom of brushwork matches the freedom of the subject: the painter’s spontaneous strokes evoke the movement of piled-up sheets. By revealing the essential while showing nothing, or nothing anymore, the artist expresses, with great sincerity, an eternal theme whose staging continues to inspire, from the voluptuous eighteenth century to the contemporary work of Sophie Calle (b.1953).
