BARTISCH, Georg (1537-1606)
Ophthalmodouleia [in Greek] das ist, Augendienst. Dresden: Matthes Stöckel, 1583.
First edition of the most important Renaissance work on ophthalmology and one of the earliest surgical works printed in the vernacular: complete with printed overlays. Bartisch's Ophthalmoduleia (eye care or Augendienst) is the first modern work on eye surgery. The striking woodcut illustrations, made after Bartisch's own drawings from life, provide a comprehensive pictorial record of Renaissance eye-surgery, and include the innovative and effective use of multiple paper sectional overlays, enabling readers to lift and view anatomic dissected sections through the head and eye.

Considered the founder of modern ophthalmology, Bartisch gained a reputation for his skilful operations on the cataract using a clean needle to depress the lens through the sclerotic. He became the court oculist to Duke August I of Saxony, to whom this work is dedicated. Bartisch employed numerous pioneering techniques in the treatment of the eyes, including both surgical and non-surgical methods. He was the first eye-doctor to recommend removal of the eye in cases of cancer. BM/STC German p. 68; Choulant-Frank p. 234; Garrison-Morton 5817; Grolier Medicine 22; Heirs of Hippocrates 369; NLM/Durling 479; Waller 756; Wellcome 697; Norman 125.

Folio (305 x 190mm). Title printed in red and black within elaborate woodcut border, full-page arms of the Dukes of Saxony and Dresden, numerous woodcut illustrations, mostly full page, including one of the head with 5 sectional overlays and one of an eye with 6 sectional overlays (title remargined just into printed border, laid down and possibly supplied, some minor marginal tears neatly repaired, longer text into printed area on C1, variable browning and occasional marginal stains). Contemporary German blindstamped pigskin (somewhat soiled, rebacked and recornered, spine ends defective, upper board detached, lacking straps). Provenance: traces of ownership inscription at foot of title – some early annotations – Royal Society of Medicine (library inkstamps [Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society]).
