Novum ac Magnum Theatrum Urbium Belgicae Foederate [– Regiae]. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu [1652].
Blaeu's celebrated town atlases of the Low Countries, preserved in the publisher’s binding and with the plates fully coloured by a contemporary hand. 'Of all the Blaeu atlases, the town atlases of the Netherlands are held in the highest esteem in the Netherlands... Bound up, by sentiment, with the most dramatic and heroic period of the shaping of the Dutch State, [they show] the proud and industrious cities of the North in their full splendour' (Van der Krogt IV-1, p.299). Begun during the denouement of the Eighty Years War, Blaeu’s Dutch town atlases were expressions of both patriotism and patronage, celebrating the independence of the Dutch States and their freedom from the Holy Roman Empire, while acknowledging Spain’s economic power. One volume covers the towns in the newly independent Dutch Republic (Foederate) and the other those towns still under Spanish royal control (Regiae), i.e. modern-day Belgium. The disposition of the maps between the first, second and third editions reflected shifting political realities. The present copy is the third Latin edition, which was published roughly contemporaneously with the first edition in Dutch. Van der Krogt 43:113.1-2.
2 volumes, folio (550 x 350mm). Text in Latin. Engraved armorial titles with letterpress overslips, 225 engraved maps, views and plans, of which one folding, 197 double-page, 10 single-page and 16 illustrations in the text, all coloured by a contemporary hand and with the armorial titles heightened in gold (a few plates lightly creased usually along centrefold, a number of old paper repairs to versos, sometimes affecting a few letters or words of letterpress, a few plates frayed at extremities, occasional marginal tears, extensive browning with plate I.20 Harlem with lower margin heavily browned and some 10 plates more heavily affected in vol. II, vol. I with dampstain starting in upper margin about half way through and extending into text and images as it progresses towards end, both armorial titles browned and with marginal wormholes and associated fraying at edges). Publisher’s vellum with yapp edges, panelled in gilt, edges gilt, green silk ties (some soiling to covers with ?ink smudges to upper cover of vol. I, extremities rubbed, head- and tailcaps to vol. II splitting). Provenance: old ink library classmarks in lower margins of armorial titles.
