Лот 80 | Brief von QUEEN ELISABETH II. (1926-2022) - Extrem seltener handgeschriebener
Letter from QUEEN ELISABETH II. (1926-2022) - Extremely rare handwritten 2-page letter with envelope from Queen Elizabeth II, 1966, on the stationery of the country estate of Sandringham. The letter is not only signed "Elisabeth R", but also written entirely in the Queen's own hand. This letter is in itself a unique specimen, as the Royal Family does not in principle produce autographs and personal letters from the Queen are extremely rare on the market. In the letter, the Queen thanks the addressee and her husband for a Christmas present she received. It also mentions horse breeding at Sandringham. The letter is addressed to "Mrs. Arpad Plesch, Clarigde's, Brook Street, W.1", a London luxury hotel and dated 31.12.1966. Mrs. Arpad Plesch is Mrs. Etti Plesch, née Maria Countess von Wurmbrand-Stuppach (1914-2003), who married the wealthy Hungarian lawyer Dr. Arpad Plesch in 1954 in her 6th marriage. She was passionate about equestrian sport. Her animals won numerous races, including the Epsom Derby twice, the most prestigious race in England. "Madame Plesch", as she was called in the 1990s according to the consignor's page, actually resided in Monaco, but always stayed in Germany for important horse races. She published her autobiography under the title "Horses and Husbands". After her death in 2003, only a few people close and trusted to her received personal mementos from her residence in Germany, including this letter. The wording of the letter reads as follows: "Dear Mrs. Plesch, I was so delighted with the lovely picture of some (?) of the Sandringham herds (?) which I received from you and Mr. Plesch for Christmas. It was extremely kind of you to think of giving me the studies of breeds / (herds?) of some of my old favourites who had all helped to make the Sandringham stud successful on the race course. I wish they'd do as well in the paddocks, now, but I suppose in horse breeding, one has to be patient and wait for luck to return once again! Thank you both very much indeed for this gift. Yours sincerely Elisabeth R". The letter was presented framed behind glass with the envelope for a long time, unfortunately the ink on the front side has faded considerably due to the effect of the sun. The back of the letter was copied and placed next to the front. The reverse of the original, on the other hand, is clearly legible. The royal coat of arms and the lettering SANDRINGHAM NORFOLK are embossed in relief and coloured in the typical red. The letter is written on the front and back and measures approx. 19 x 12 cm. Frame approx. 44 x 33.5 cm. Lapel and obverse each with traces of glue, folded in the middle, slightly wavy. Writing on page 1 and the envelope strongly faded, writing on reverse with signature "Elisabeth R" but well preserved. It is well known that the royal family traditionally inhabits the Sandringham estate from Christmas until the end of January. King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II, died at Sandringham House.
