Reports of Medical Cases, selected with a view of illustrating the symptoms and cures of diseases by a reference to morbid anatomy. London: Richard Taylor [for] Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, 1827-1831.
First edition of the work containing Bright's most important and influential research. Vol. I presents his case histories of kidney disorders, now collectively and eponymously known as 'Bright's disease', vol. II deals mainly with diseases of the brain and nervous system. ‘Bright was the first to distinguish between renal and cardiac edema, and the first to link renal edema and the presence of albumin in the urine with particular structural changes in the kidneys observed post-mortem [...]The work's engraved plates, meticulously hand-colored to accord with Bright's descriptions of the specimens examined, are among the most beautiful of medical illustrations. Most were drawn by Frederick Richard Say, a distinguished portraitist whose painting of Bright now hangs in the Royal College of Physicians of London’ (Norman 341). According to the publisher's ledgers, 243 copies of vol. I and 171 copies of both parts of vol. II were sold between 26 September 1827 and 5 September 1861, when the last remaining copies were destroyed by the fire at Longman's warehouse in Pater Noster Row. GM 2285 & 4206; Grolier Medicine 60A; Heirs of Hippocrates 1451; Norman 341; Waller 1460; Wellcome II, p. 239.
Two volumes in three, quarto (307 x 232mm). 54 plates comprising 47 hand-coloured engravings, the majority by William Say after Frederick Richard Say, and 7 uncoloured lithographs, 5 folding. I with title and dedication leaves cut down and mounted without loss of text, both leaves of preface repaired at gutter, final leaf of contents b4 and Plate 1 leaf of descriptive letterpress with repaired marginal tears, some light finger-soiling and staining mostly confined to margins, light spotting to plates 32-40 and their descriptive text). Late 19th-/early 20th- century red half morocco over marbled-paper covered sides by Sizer (second volume rebacked, extremities rubbed, joints more heavily).
