41 autograph letters, the majority signed, by 19th century British artists and writers, c.1791-1891
Approximately 64 pages in total, various sizes, with six notecards, five Royal Academy lecture cards, three newspaper clippings and one exhibition entry form.

Letters on paintings, exhibitions, catalogues, proofs and other matters from a range of prominent British artists and writers of the 19th century, the majority connected with the Royal Academy. A note from John Francis Rigaud concerns the payment and purchase [by John Boydell] of a ‘picture of the Prince of Wales’. An exhibition entry sheet completed by John William Inchbold for the intended inclusion of ‘A Study, in March’ and ‘On the Lake of Thun’ in an exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1855 has on the verso a list of other potential artists, alongside the number of works and mediums for each, likely in the hand of William Michael Rossetti. A letter from Henry Perronet Briggs mentions his occupation with ‘several large works to execute during the next year’, another from John Mallard Bromley is regarding a meeting to discuss a painting the following Sunday. Thomas Crofton Croker writes to William Behnes about a friend who ‘wants a bust modelled in clay’, whilst Charles Lock Eastlake writes to George Scharf on the matter of a ‘biographical sketch’ entering the ‘next edition of our “British School” catalogue’. Richard Rhodes apologises to a Mr Griffiths: he is ‘very sorry that I have not been able to fulfil’ the creation of a plate, but ‘it will not be long before I shall have the pleasure of showing you a proof’. A letter from William Hilton requests assistance in ‘obtaining permission’ for a young British artist, Mr Smith, ‘to draw at the British Museum’ in 1824, alongside a plethora of other correspondence and documents relating to him. George Philip Reinagle requests an immediate response from a client for payment – ‘I have received no communication from you’ – and threatens to contact his solicitors if he does not hear back soon.
