Provenance:
(1) A terminus post-quem for the dating of this manuscript can be found in the hymn for Easter Sunday (Ἀναστάσεως ἡμέρα), in first plagal mode, set to music by Chrysaphes the Younger (c. 1620-c. 1682), protopsaltes of the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia, who helped Byzantine music flourish under Ottoman rule.
(2) German collection.
Content:
The manuscript belongs to the type officially called akolouthiai, or 'Orders of Service', but also designated by such names as anthologion, papadike, psaltikon and mousikon. Prefaced by the small chant manual called Papadike, it is a handbook transmitting the Byzantine musical tradition of the 14th and 15th centuries and contains a selection of the most important, primarily ordinary chants for Vespers (Hesperinos), Matins (Orthros) and Divine Liturgies (Vespers, Matins and Mass).
The contents of the present manuscript include: Papadike, beginning: 'Ἀρχὴ σὺν Θεῷ ἁγίῳ τῶν σημαδίων τῆς ψαλτικῆς τέχνης', the text from the most developed 'Type D', typically copied from the 14th-18th century, ff.2-9; the 'small wheel', a diagram to visualise and get apprentices to demonstrate the oktoechic system through solmisation exercise f.10; blanks ff.11-13; Kekragarion, ordinary chants for Vespers (Hesperinos), beginning with the 'Kyrie ekekraxa in first mode, in Koukouzeles' B-version (known in manuscripts from the 15th-18th centuries), ff.14-183v; Eleven stichera (with initial doxologies) for the series of eleven 'Morning Gospels', from Matins (Orthros) on Sundays ff.184-211v; blank f.212; Mass of John Chrysostomos f.213; Mass of Basil the Great f.252; a hymn for Easter Sunday (Ἀναστάσεως ἡμέρα), in first plagal mode, set to music by Chrysaphes the Younger ff.288v-303.
