CANALETTO [Canal, Antonio] (1697-1768)

Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus Celebriores. Venice: J-B Pasquali, 1751-1751-1752.

Second edition of this magnificent collection of views of Venice after Canaletto. Antonio Visentini (1688-1782) was commissioned to produce the work by Consul Joseph Smith after paintings by Canaletto in his own collection. The work was started in 1728 and completed in 1735 when an edition with only 14 views was published; all three parts were first issued together in 1742. Berlin Kat. 2695; Cicognara 4113; Graesse II, 31.

3 parts in one volume, oblong folio (347 x 505mm). Additional engraved title to first part, double portrait of Canaletto and Visentini, one hand-coloured engraved double portrait of Antonius Canale and Antonius Visentini, 3 title-pages printed in red and black and with an engraved vignette, two of which are hand-coloured, and 38 (14 + 12 + 12) engraved views from Venice, all coloured by a later hand, letterpress table of contents at beginning (a few lower corners repaired, mainly to first part, some light insignificant soiling and staining, very short marginal tear to title of third part, plate XIV in first part and plate 8 in second slightly shorter than the rest). Modern half vellum over marbled-paper covered boards, upper cover with central vellum panel with oval miniature at centre with a view of the Ducal palace seen from Canale Grande, under glass (light soiling to extremities).
