CHÉREAU, François II (1717–1755)

Receuil de Marines et de Vaisseaux. Paris: F. Chéreau, 1754.

A unique ensemble of maritime prints, formed in the mid 18th-century for the Parisian connoisseur market and preserved in a binding of appropriate grandeur by Padeloup. The earliest plates are the remarkable etchings after Bruegel and Hollar. The 6 Bruegel plates are in mixed states as follows: B. 105 and 107 in the first of two states, B. 102 in the only state, B.101 in the second and final state, B. 104 and B. 103 state uncertain as trimmed to the image, while three of the plates have the small Jug with Flower watermark. However, the many grand plates dating from the later 17th century form the main body of the collection, often uniting maritime and topographical themes to striking effect. Gudenus's monumental views of Istanbul are just one of many fine renderings of ports and harbours, and the impressive dimensions of many plates, combined with a uniformly-high quality of impression, make this an album of the greatest distinction.
