A TERRACOTTA GROUP REPRESENTING THE ROMAN CHARITY OR CIMON AND PERO, PROBABLY FLEMISH, SECOND HALF 17TH CENTURY

The Roman Charity is a subject described by various ancient authors but rarely treated in sculpture. Cimon, condemned to starvation in prison, is saved by his daughter, Pero, who nurses him during her daily visit. This singular iconography, a symbol of filial piety, was uncommon in the Middle Ages, but its revival in the Renaissance and then in the 17th century made it a common Baroque subject.
Our terracotta group is part of the Flemish Baroque tradition of this subject, first treated by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and then translated around 1651-1652 into a bozzetto by the Antwerp sculptor Artus Quellinus the Elder (1609-1668), a commission from the City of Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. BK-AM-51-11). The classical treatment, fine finishing touches and small size of our group, are probably the work of an artist influenced by Quellinus.
