CHARLES NATOIRE, YOUNG MAN ON HIS KNEES PREPARING TO MODEL, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER, INSCRIBED

This is a preparatory sketch for L'École du modèle, a watercolour painted by Charles Natoire in 1746, (according to the date at the bottom of the sheet), which is important for a number of reasons, not least as a visual representation of the study of drawing in eighteenth-century France. The finished watercolour is in the Courtauld Gallery in London (inv. D.1952.RW.3973; Caviglia, op. cit., no. D370, ill) and there is an early sketch of this composition, executed one year earlier, previously in the collection of Xavier Atger in Montpellier (Musée Atger, inv. MA 1, album M 43 f° 26; Ibid., D362). Five other preparatory studies for this ambitious composition are held in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-1975-89), the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (inv. 1966.45), the Fogg Museum in Cambridge (inv. 1979.94), and in a private collection (ibid., no. D363 to no. D367, ill).

The student shown here is preparing clay for modelling; the clay is placed in a damp cloth inside a large basin so that it does not dry out, in the final composition he can be seen in the lower right foreground. While a number of students are drawing or sculpting the group of two naked men in the centre of the room, the teacher - possibly Natoire himself, who held this position at the Académie from 1737 onwards - is seated in an armchair in the left foreground and appears to be giving advice to two students who have come to observe the master's drawing. This illustration of the teaching of drawing at the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture was very topical at the time, as in 1746, the Mercure de France published its Projet pour l’établissement d’Ecoles gratuites de Dessin en France (project for the creation of free drawing schools in France) (ibid., p. 336).
