Further details

CLAUDE JOSEPH VERNET (1714-1789), SUNSET WITH A DUTCH WARSHIP, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND DATED

Claude Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) enjoyed an international reputation even before he became official marine painter to Louis XV (1710-1774) in 1753 with the famous commission for a series depicting the great ports of France. His stay at the Académie de France in Rome had established his reputation among a cosmopolitan clientele in the circle of his great friend, the French ambassador, the Duc de Saint-Aignan (1712-1788). His marriage in 1745 to the Irishwoman Virginia Paker (1728-1810), daughter of an English captain in the Papal Navy, also introduced him to the Anglo-Saxon public and opened up his clientele to a include northern Europeans.

Vernet, adapting to his patrons specific desires, drew on his architectural and naval motifs to combine them in attractive fictional compositions. At the request of his Amsterdam patron, Mr Oudermeulen, here Vernet incorporates details specific to him, such as the Dutch flag on the ship's mast. The Dutchman may also have been pleased by the very French allusion to the east wing of the Louvre, which is included in the buildings at far right. This shows the colonnade in its pre-1770 state before the sloping roofs at its ends were removed.
