CONQUEST OF INNER SPACE. GREAT UNDERSEA ADVENTURES ... A TELEVISION SERIES OF ONE HOUR SPECIALS
JACQUES COUSTEAU, [1966]
Mimeographed manuscript, 13 hand-colored illustrations by J.C. Roux, color illustrations, and black and white photographs, tipped to onto 30 album leaves and bound in original red leatherette, additional hand-colored world map with proposed shoot locations laid in, [early 1966].

The original pitch-book for "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau," Cousteau's first television series and of crucial importance to the ocean preservation movement.

The name of Jacques Cousteau (1910-1997) is practically synonymous with ocean exploration and marine-life preservation. He co-invented the Aqua-Lung, the first successful SCUBA, surmised echolocation in porpoises in his best-selling book The Silent World, and appeared on documentary television series from 1966 to 1982. The present pitch-book describes 32 themes to be presented in 24 one-hour color films. This would not be his first appearance in film or on television—by 1964 his films had already won three Academy Awards—but this is his first pitch for a television series. In his own words from this book, "The [one-hour special] films are an adventure story, that of the struggle of man versus a hostile environment. Protected by the rough frontier, - the everchanging, often stormy surface, - a cold, dark, silent world defies the intruder. Yet, the sea, made of many layers, each of them a complete universe, is heavily populated by animals governed by the same law as that of the jungle: the fight for survival. At least for many decades the future of mankind depends more on the exploration of SPACE ALIVE than on that of OUTER SPACE."

Not long after Cousteau and his team pitched this series, ABC agreed to a one-off special, "Conshelf Adventure," which was Cousteau's first made-for-TV documentary. The Conshelf project was an experimental underwater habitat in the Mediterranean pioneered by Cousteau earlier in the 1960s. The wild success of "Conshelf Adventure" greenlit the whole series, with the first episode of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" appearing on 8 January 1968. The English language narration was by Richard Johnson for BBC and Rod Serling for ABC.
