Provenance

Jan Matthijsz. Ban (c. 1566-1624), Haarlem, 1604.

Anonymous sale; Jolles de Winter, Amsterdam, 23rd May 1764, lot 3, as ‘Een Capitaal stuck, zynde een Ryk Ordinantie, verbeeldende de Opwekking van Lazarus, zeer Uitvoerig en kragtig op een Paneel geschildert, en wel geconserveerd, hoog 64 duim, breed 75 duim; zynde het beste wat men van die Meester gezien heeft, beschreven by C. Vermander in 't Leven der Schilders, pag. 207 in de eerste Colom’ (‘A capital piece, being a rich composition representing the Raising of Lazarus, painted in great detail and very forcefully on a panel, and well preserved, ca. 160 x 187.5 cm; being the best seen from this master, described by C. van Mander in the Lives of the Painters, page 207 in the first column’), sold for 205 guilders to ‘Fiseau’, probably the following,

Jean-Étienne Fiseau (variously spelled Fiso, Fiseau, Fezeau, or Fiziau), Amsterdam.

Presumably purchased shortly after the Amsterdam sale by the 2nd Lord Conway, later created the first Marquess of Hertford (1718-1794), and by descent at Ragley Hall, Alcester, Warwickshire.
