Further details

DIRK MAES, HUNTING SCENE, RED CHALK,PEN AND BROWN INK FRAMING LINES, MONOGRAMED

A pupil of Nicolas Berchem (1620-1683), Dirck Maes brought the meticulous, precise style of the Dutch Golden Age to England. He was close to William III of Orange (1650-1702) and worked for him as a battle painter. When the prince became King of England, Maas spent a great deal of time in and around London. The artist was also noted for his hunting scenes, quickly sketched in sanguine, a technique he also used to prepare his battle pieces. His preparatory drawings can be distinguished from his finished compositions, which were often with watercolour or simply done in black chalk and wash. The present drawing is monogrammed, which is rare for such free and spontaneous work. It is possible that the composition shows William III hunting. There are a couple of paintings of this subject that may loosely relate to this.
