Edward I (1239-1307), King of England, Lord of Ireland, Duke of Aquitaine
Letters patent, inspeximus of a charter of Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells, granting an acre of land in Kington St Michael to the priory of St Mary in Kington, Devizes, 16 September 1291
In Latin on vellum, 21 lines on one membrane, approx. 240 x 275mm, flourished letters in first line, space left for initial letter; substantial fragment of the Great Seal in green wax, approx. 85mm diameter, pendant on silk cords. Framed and glazed. Provenance: Part of a collection assembled by Edward Michell, of Monkton House, nr. Chippenham, solicitor, in the mid-19th century, and given by his mother to Philip Bliss (1787-1857) – his sale, Sotheby's, 21 August 1858, lot 95 – Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), MS. 18143 – Phillipps sale, Sotheby's, 11 November 1946, lot 136; Sothebys, 8 December 1981, lot 77 (part), where the previous provenance is recorded.

A royal grant to a Wiltshire priory. Edward confirms the grant to the priory of St Mary and its prioress Clarissa by Robert Burnell (bishop of Bath and Wells and Edward's lord chancellor), giving them an acre of land in a field called 'le Goldshawe' in Kington St Michael and the advowson of the church; witnesses include Antony Bek, Bishop of Durham, William of Louth, Bishop of Ely and King Edward's brother, Edmund Crouchback (1245-1296).

Edward's presence in Devizes, Wiltshire, may be connected with the recent death of his mother, Eleanor of Provence, at the nearby Amesbury Priory on 24/25 June. In May/June that year, the King had been at Norham on the Scottish border, for negotiations to select the next king of Scotland, during which the future claimants were required to acknowledge Edward's overlordship; by October he was at Abergavenny to settle a dispute between the two Marcher lords, the Earls of Hereford and Gloucester.
