Le Premiér (and Second) Volume de la toison dor. Paris: Antoine Bonnemère for Francois Regnault, 10 December 1517.

Beautifully and extensively illustrated second edition of Guillame Fillastre’s famous history of the Golden Fleece. The work was first printed by Regnault in 1516 of which this edition is an exact copy. Fillastre wrote his history of the order of the Golden Fleece at the request of the Duke of Burgundy between 1468 and 1473. Fillastre’s work helped refine and fix and the symbolism of the order, whilst attenuating its pagan origins. The work retraces the history of the six fleeces, those of Jason, Jacob, Gideon, Mesa, Job and David, relating them to the six virtues, Generosity, Justice Prudence, Faithfulness, Patience and Clemency and discusses the historical, spiritual and ceremonial significance of the six fleeces from sources in Biblical and Classical literature. A fine three quarter page woodcut of Fillastre presenting his work to Charles the Bold appears at the beginning of both volumes. The large three quarter page woodcuts are mostly from Verard; there are also two small cuts with solid black borders the were first used by Jean Bonhomme in his edition of the ‘destruction de Troie’, Paris 1484. Charles V was the Grand Commander of the order of the Golden Fleece, however François I, his great rival, was elected knight of the order in the 18th chapter of the order held in Brussels in 1516, and it was in this context that Fillastre’s work was published at Paris. Many of the illustrations celebrate the deeds of both their common ancestors such as Charles de Valois and Philippe le Hardi. 2 volumes in one Folio (320 x 222mm) text in double column, ruled in red throughout, Regnault’s woodcut elephant device on both title-pages (Silvestre 43), second title with large grotesque woodcut letter, white-on-black criblé initials, nine large half- or three-quarter page woodcuts, 69 woodcut illustrations in the text with repeats (occasional thumb-mark). Contemporary blind-stamped French calf, sides blind-ruled to a panel design, central panel in a ‘Gril de St Laurent’ design of vertical strips of repeated scrolls of acanthus leaves and vases, outer panel with the same blind scroll, gilt spine rebacked in the 18th-century, red morocco label gilt, edges gilt and gauffered (extremities restored, little rubbed and scratched, small tear in lower cover, lacking clasps and catches). Provenance: Nicolas-Joseph Foucault (1643-1721; engraved armorial bookplate. His library was ‘parmi les plus précieuse concernant l’histoire de France’ Guigard II p. 221) — Earls of Macclesfield (armorial bookplate, Shirburn Castle blindstamp).
