Further details

FRANCESCO DE ROSA, CALLED PACECCO DE ROSA (1607-1656), THE MEETING OF JACOB AND RACHEL, OIL ON CANVAS

The graceful, brightly coloured figures in the present painting bear witness to the talents of the Neapolitan painter Pacecco de Rosa (1607-1656), who applied his colour ‘with exquisite gentleness, [yet] with a solid, vigorous impasto that kept his pictures in all their brilliance and freshness’ (L.- G. Michaud(ed.), Biographie universelle ancienne et moderne, Paris, 1843, XXXVI (second edition), p. 542.) There are two versions of this composition; the other, considered by Achille della Ragione to be later and inferior to the present painting, is now in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples (see A. della Ragione, op. cit. supra, p. 22).

The story of Jacob and Rachel, a theme often treated by Western artists, comes from the Book of Genesis (29, 1-13). Jacob, on the run from his brother Esau, from whom he has stolen their father's blessing, meets the beautiful shepherdess Rachel beside a well. The moment they see each other they are overcome with emotion, and Jacob vows to sacrifice everything to be able to marry her. Laban, Rachel's father, asks him for seven years' work in exchange for his daughter's hand in marriage. However, Laban later deceives him, giving him his eldest daughter Leah at the end of the seven years, on the pretext that custom forbids the youngest daughter of a family to marry before the eldest. Jacob, still hopelessly in love with Rachel, agrees to work for another seven years to finally be allowed to marry her. In the Jewish religion, Jacob and Rachel embody the patriarch and matriarch: their bond is so strong that it will be the foundation of a whole tribe.
