Compendiosa totius anatomic delincatio, acre exarata, in English. Translated by Nicholas Udall (1505-1556). London: Nicholas Hyll for Thomas Geminus, 1553.
First edition in English, based on Vesalius’ great anatomy text conceived specifically for teaching. The Epitome was produced simultaneously with the longer Fabrica as a teaching tool, providing larger illustrations and a short text keyed specifically to the illustrations. Just two years later in England in 1545, Geminus prepared an abridged version of the Epitome, still in Latin, which he tells us in the dedication was disseminated throughout Europe. For this first edition in English aimed at ‘unlatined Surgeons’, the playwright Nicholas Udall translated the Vesalian indices to the plates, with further text deriving from Henri de Mondeville’s Surgery, which had been incorporated into Thomas Vicary’s Anatomie of the bodie of man (1548). Both of Geminus’ editions were illustrated with close copies of the Vesalian plates, now reproduced as copper-engravings rather than woodcuts. This relatively new process allowed for finer, clearer images; the elegant engraved title is considered the ‘first engraving of any artistic merit produced in England’ (Hind). Two issues are known, with and without the date 1553 on the title; the present copy bears the date. This copy was owned and used by early physicians, bearing not only contemporary annotations but inscriptions of Robert Hall, 'Chirurgian'; he may be the Robert Hall of Worcester who was licensed to practice surgery in 1612 (Wallis, Eighteenth-Century Medics, 1988). Cushing VI.C.-2; STC 11716; ESTC S96225; Wellcome 2732; Norman 887.
Broadsheet folio (368 x 250 mm). Engraved architectural title and 35 (of 40) engraved sheets (one folding), the first muscle-man plate in duplicate making a total of 36 plates present, criblé metalcut initials (all leaves on guard, many leaves repaired with some loss, stained, title soiled, repaired and backed with an early leaf, last leaf backed with an early leaf, Adam & Eve plate backed with repairs and minor loss). Modern three-quarter calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt (small tear at spine ends). Provenance: early annotations – Robert Hall, physician (several early inscriptions, possibly surgeon of Worcester in 1612) – David Reid, 1728 (several inscriptions) – [Royal Society of Medicine] .
