GERSON, Johannes (1363-1429)

Opera. – HENRICUS DE HASSIA (c.1325-1397). De contractibus. – HENRICUS DE HOYTA (d.1397). De contractibus. – Nicolaus ORESME (c.1320-82). De moneta. [Cologne:] Johann Koelhoff, the Elder, 24 May 1483; 31 August 1483; 1483; 24 February 1484.

First edition of the collected works of Gerson, one of the most influential theologians of his time. As Chancellor of the University of Paris, he advocated simplicity and directness in theological writings, with study of the Bible and Church Fathers taking precedence over scholastic commentary. In his own extensive oeuvres, he developed a mystical theology, considered health and medical matters, criticised the Roman de la Rose and supported Joan of Arc. Although many copies of the first edition survive, the vast majority of sets are imperfect, often consisting of only one or two volumes. The present copy collates as Pellechet 5124 with quires y8 and z8 and not y10 and z6 as GW. HC 7621*; GW 10713; Bod-inc G-085; BSB-Ink G-182; Goff G-185; ISTC ig00185000.

4 vols., chancery folio (281 x 202mm). 382 (of 388 leaves, lacking preliminary quire p6); 400 (of 401 leaves, without first blank); 325 (of 328, lacking first leaf) and 2 leaves replaced in contemporary manuscript [s6, t6]);433 (of 434 leaves, lacking first leaf). Rubricated, some contemporary quiring preserved, partial column on I:Cc6r crossed through as ‘vacat’ as in other copies. (Some light dampstaining, more prevalent in vol. 2, few minor wormholes at beginning and end, very occasional light browning, final blank leaf in vol. 2 torn.) Contemporary undecorated pigskin over thick wooden boards, 2 fore-edge clasps, evidence of title-labels on front covers, upper cover and spines lettered, vellum ms. pastedowns from a 15th-century Spanish Antiphonal and 14th-century German missal (a few wormholes, minor wear at extremities). Provenance: Villingen monastery (inscription erased from first leaf) – Michael Chasles (1793-1880; bookplate in vol. I) – Muenster, German Pedagogical Institute (20th-century stamp).
