GOVERT FLINCK, MEN PLAYING CARDS AT A TABLE IN AN INN, PEN AND BROWN INK, DOUBLE PEN AND BROWN INK FRAMING LINES

The traditional attribution of this drawing to the Flemish master David Teniers can only be explained by its iconography, which is less common in Rembrandt’s circle. One artist who did produce several tavern scenes (and to whom this drawing was also attributed, as recorded in an inscription on the mount, as well as in Benesch, op. cit., 1964, p. 117, n. 9) is Philips Koninck (1619-1688), for instance a sheet at the print room of Leiden university (inv. PK-T-AW-642; see W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, VI (1982), no. 1325, ill.). Koninck’s style, however, is less precise and pointed than the present sheet’s, which compares closely to that of Govert Flinck’s works from the 1630s, such as his drawing at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, inv. 2007.5 (Sumowski, op. cit., IV (1981), no. 948b, ill.). For other examples, see the recent discussion of the drawing by Martin Royalton-Kisch (op. cit.), whom we are grateful to for his assistance.
