HUBERT ROBERT (1733-1808), A FOUNTAIN WITH A JET OF WATER IN A LANDSCAPE, A HERM IN THE FOREGROUND; A FOUNTAIN WITH A JET OF WATER AND A WATERFALL IN AN ARCHITECTURAL SETTING, OIL ON CANVAS, A PAIR

After completing his apprenticeship in Paris with the sculptor Slodtz (1705–1764), Hubert Robert (1733–1808) left for Rome in 1754, where he remained for ten years. Like the engraver Piranesi (1720-1778), the artist was fascinated by Italian classical monuments, which he captured in drawings so that he could reuse the motifs in different compositions. Often produced after his return to Paris, his large paintings combined these memories of Rome with French architecture.

The grand staircase in the present composition borrows as much from the entrance to the Villa Albani and the staircases of the Villa Sacchetti, with their sarcophagi punctuating the flights, as it does from the Ambassadors' Staircase at the Palace of Versailles, which was destroyed in the 1750s. A similar staircase by Robert, depicted from the opposite angle, was sold in Paris in 2016 (Hôtel d'Evreux sale, Evreux, 24 November 2016, [Me Fraysse et associés], lot 190). Dated by the artist 1764, it was one of his last works in Italy. The painting continues this embellished study of the ruins, though was most likely produced after the painter's return to France.

The large pool in the painting is reminiscent of that in the Tuileries, which the artist painted many times. An oil painting depicting Rousseau's temporary floating mausoleum, now in the Carnavalet Museum (Paris, inv. P1438), shows this large pool at night, ringed with verdant foliage and flambeaux. It should be noted that two other paintings of very similar dimensions to these, depicting country landscapes, were sold at Christie's in New York in 2003 (Christie's sale, New York, 10 December 2003, lots 76 and 77). With their original format, these four paintings could be part of the same commission and would reflect the antiquarian taste of the second half of the 18th century.
