APIANUS, Petrus (1495-1552) and Bartholomeus AMANTIUS (fl. 16th century). Inscriptiones sacrosanctae vetustatis. Ingolstadt: Petrus Apianus, 1534.

First edition of an illustrated compilation of ancient inscriptions and art, from the press of Peter Apian. While best known for his lavish scientific works, Apian was commissioned by the banker Raimund Fugger to publish these ancient inscriptions, the majority of which were in Fugger's own celebrated collection. At the end of the previous century, Pomponius Leto and his Roman Academy had begun to take a new interest in the surviving epigraphy of ancient Rome; this antiquarian trend eventually produced printed compilations such as this one, which not only gave access to the material history of the city to those further afield, but allowed inscriptions from across Europe to be gathered and studied together: "an epoch-making recovery of the day-to-day life of the ancient world" (Grafton). Apian's work played an important part in transmitting Italian material culture to Northern Europe. The book is gorgeously illustrated, with picaresque woodcut borders by Hans Brosamer, many inscriptions depicted in situ, and an emblematic device after Dürer. Adams A-1291; BMC/STC German, p. 37; Cicognara 3095. See also Anthony Grafton, Bring Our Your Dead and Erwin Panofsky, "Albrecht Dürer and Classical Antiquity" in Meaning in the Visual Arts.

Folio (293 x 207mm). Title page printed in red and black. Greek and Roman types. Woodcuts throughout, including borders and mathematical initials by Hans Brosamer, printer's device on final leaf (a little worming in gutter and minor dampstaining at ends, final leaf a little dustsoiled). Old vellum (rebacked with original spine panel laid down, lacking ties). Provenance: Vienna, Jesuits (inscription dated 1699) – marginalia and corrections in red pencil, possibly by German archaeologist Johann von Raiser, along with small sheet of notes in same hand – Harris Dunscombe Colt, FSA (1901-1973, American archaeologist; bookplate).
