Further details

JAN VAN GOYEN (1596-1656), DUNE LANDSCAPE WITH A THATCHED COTTAGE NEXT TO AN OAK TREE, A MEADOW IN THE BACKGROUND, OIL ON PANEL, MONOGRAMMED AND DATED (LOWER RIGHT)

Dated 1634, this painting comes from a transitional period in the work of Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). During the 1620s and early 1630s, the influence of his master, Essais van de Velde (1587-1630), was still to be found in his compositions, but from 1632, when he moved to The Hague, his palette slowly began to change. In the present painting, the greys and blues, reminiscent of van de Velde's work, are still present, but the beiges, browns and yellows already herald the more restricted palette that would mark van Goyen's works in the decades to come.

Able to capture a wide range of atmospheric effects and achieve a masterful sense of depth in his compositions, van Goyen rendered this view with delicate, fluid brushstrokes. While the clouds are painted with a lively, broad stroke, the landscape is executed in a liquid style, painted quickly in wet paint with great attention paid to the narrative detail. He manages to capture the light wonderfully in his landscapes, partly through his expert use of a translucent preparation that allowed the natural grain of the wood panel to show through the oil glazes, particularly in the sky. The prominent inclusion of the oak in the centre of this painting adds both interest to the subject and an important compositional emphasis, which the artist also displayed in several other works of the mid-1630s.

A copy of this painting attributed to Pieter de Molijn (1595-1661) was in the collection of Count Walther von Hallwyl (1839-1921) in Stockholm in 1930 (see H. Beck, 1973, op. cit., p. 494).
