JANSSONIUS, Johannes (1588-1664)

Illustriorum Italiae urbium tabulae. Amsterdam: J. Janssonius, [1657].

Extremely rare fifth volume of Janssonius’ town book atlas relating to Italy, including fine, large folding plates of ancient Rome, Venice and Florence, superbly coloured throughout by a contemporary hand. In the competitive world of cartographic publishing in 17th-century Amsterdam, Janssonius was extremely innovative. Van der Krogt supposes that Janssonius had acquired the plates from Braun and Hogenburg as early at the 1640s, and set about using these as a basis for his 8 volume town atlas Theatrum Urbium Celebriorum. This appeared well in advance of Blaeu, whose ‘Cities of the world’ was only at the planning stage in the 1650s. Janssonius’ town atlas could be purchased as a complete set or as individual volumes. Van der Krogt IV-1, 42:15.

Folio (492 x 322mm). Text in Latin. Additional engraved architectonic title with printed overslip in central cartouche and with caption beneath Vesta and lower cartouche left blank, 3 large folding plates of ancient Rome, Venice and Florence, 57 double-page plates and 19 engraved illustrations in the text, all coloured by a contemporary hand (letterpress lightly creased and fraying at edges with associated very short marginal tears and chips, some variable browning throughout and with a few short marginal tears, these tears extending into images in plates nos 1, 2, 22, 24, 27 and 79, folding plate of ancient Rome with tiny tears at creasefold joints but without loss, several other plates lightly creased at gutter, plates 49 and 51 with tiny patches of adhesion at gutter with associated patches of loss). Contemporary vellum panelled in gilt with foliate cornerpieces and central arabesque, covers with yapp edges, gilt edges (lightly soiled, lower cover heavily stained, extremities rubbed with tiny losses at corners and spine ends, lacking silk ties). Provenance: Robert Harley, first earl of Oxford and Mortimer (1661-1724, politician and bibliophile; engraved armorial bookplate dated 1714 on verso of letterpress title).
