Five 16-inch double-sided acetates of unreleased material from Jazz at the Philharmonic recordings organised by Norman Granz at the Syria Mosque Auditorium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 5 March 1947, featuring Coleman Hawkins, Buck Clayton, Flip Phillips and Buddy Rich.



The Complete Jazz at the Philharmonic on Verve 1944-49 includes just four tracks from this date – How High The Moon, Bell Boy Blues, Boogie Woogie Cocktail and Sweet Lorraine. Clocking in at over ten minutes, the lengthy How High The Moon was issued by Granz in 1947 as two 10-inch shellacs on the Mercury label, under the title Norman Granz’ Jazz at the Philharmonic – How High The Moon – the first date to include tracks issued by Granz under his own name. Tad Hershorn notes: ‘In the hectic month of June 1947, Granz began producing new recordings under the name Clef Records by releasing a new version of How High The Moon recorded in March 1947 in Pittsburgh, in hopes of recapturing some of the glow and financial remuneration from the immensely popular Jazz at the Philharmonic Volume I.' Hershorn, 110-11.



As magnetic tape superseded direct-to-disc as the dominant recording format, Granz transferred his masters to tape, and the original lacquers were shelved. Horrified at the request to dispose of the superfluous session acetates in the late 1960s, Granz’ then assistant Eric Miller requested to keep them, to which Granz replied ‘Sure, it’ll give you something to do in your retirement.’



Four discs unlabelled but variously numbered and inscribed in chinagraph pencil 'Jazz Concert Copy', the fifth with 'Radio Recorders, Hollywood' label and typewritten details 'Copy, Pittsburgh, Spring 1947', date-stamped 'Friday Jul 28 1950', in brown paper sleeves variously inscribed in pencil 'Norman Granz, Jazz at the Phil., Pittsburgh, 3-5-47' and in felt pen 'Unissued', the recordings include the tracks Blues at the Philharmonic, Tea for Two, How High the Moon, Sweet and Lovely, You Go To My Head, Stuffy, Body and Soul, Talk of the Town, I May Be Wrong, Kersey’s Cocktail Boogie, I Can’t Get Started, I Cried For You, Blues and Jam. Provenance: Norman Granz (1918-2001; record producer) – Eric Miller (1941-2017; Granz’ assistant and protégé).
