LAMBERT, Aylmer Bourke (1761-1842)
A Description of the Genus Pinus...to which is added an appendix containing descriptions and figures of some other remarkable plants, and an account of the Lambertian Herbarium, by Mr. David Don. Second Edition. London: Weddell, 1828-1837.
The Derby copy of the second edition of the first great iconography of conifers, originally published in folio in 1803 with magnificent plates by Ferdinand Bauer; this copy is enhanced with 15 watercolour plates in the third volume with no evidence of outline or other engraving underneath. Some of the plates have been re-engraved from the first edition, others printed from parts of the folio plates, and a few new plates added. As noted by all the bibliographies, all copies show differences: Nissen calls for between 79 and 91 plates and Great Flower Books 'about 76'. The watercolours vary from the engraved versions included in the third edition of 1837-1842. Many of the engraved plates have added botanical details in watercolour. Great Flower Books (1990) pp.110-111; Henrey III, 921 and 922; Nissen BBI 1125; Stafleu & Cowan 4145.

3 volumes, large folio (640 x 490mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece of Lambert and 100 plates, comprising 97 fully coloured plates, one partly coloured, and two double-page and uncoloured, including 15 watercolour plates in the third volume with no evidence of outline or other engraving underneath. Engravings by Barlow, Mackenzie, Smith, Warner and Weddell after Bauer, Ehret, Manz, Smith and Sowerby: a few lithographed by G. Scharf, one after J. Lycett (portrait spotted and the facing title-page browned, both uncoloured double-page plates with heavy offsetting, variable scattered spotting and offsetting throughout). Contemporary green half morocco gilt, gilt edges (spines and corners carefully restored). Provenance: The Earl of Derby (Knowsley Hall, bookplate and shelfmark) – Robert de Belder (sale, Sotheby's 28 April 1987, lot 201) – Christie's New York, An Important Botanical Library Part I, 4 June 1997, lot 92).
