Vitraux pour Jérusalem. Monte Carlo: André Sauret, 1963.

‘A stained glass window is a transparent partition between my heart and the heart of the world...To read the Bible is to perceive a certain light, and the window has to make this obvious through its simplicity and grace... The thoughts have nested in me for many years, since the time when my feet walked on the Holy Land, when I prepared myself to create engravings of the Bible. They strengthened me and encouraged me to bring my modest gift to the Jewish people, that people that lived here thousands of years ago.’ This description of the enduring power of stained glass windows was given by Chagall in February 1962 when his glass creations for the The Ein Karem campus synagogue at the Hadassah Medical Centre in Jerusalem were unveiled.

The present livre d'artiste illustrates and discusses the designs and artistic process for Chagall's Ein Karem campus synagogue stained-glass windows which depicted the twelve tribes of Israel. Jean Leymaire, a French art historian, curator and writer, shared an enduring friendship with Chagall organizing, throughout the 1950s, exhibitions of the artist’s work at the Musée National d’Art Moderne. The two developed a friendship based of an ethical and religious reading of art that was informed by their shared faith and Leymaire’s own fascination with the traditional artistic practices gave him a greater understanding of the inspirations and sources that informed Chagall’s works.
