Further details
MARIA VAN OOSTERWYCK (1630-1693), A SWAG OF FRUIT, BERRIES AND FLOWERS HUNG IN A NICHE, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED (LOWER LEFT)
Maria van Oosterwyck (1630-1693) belongs to the distinguished Dutch tradition of flower painting, following in the footsteps of Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684) and Willem van Aelst (1627-1683), with whom she successively trained in Utrecht and then in Amsterdam. A rare female figure of the Dutch Golden Age, she was recognized and celebrated during her lifetime, earning the admiration of prominent patrons such as Emperor Leopold I of the Holy Roman Empire (1640-1705), who acquired in 1668 a Vanitas with Skull and Celestial Globe (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv. GG 5714), and Cosimo III de’ Medici (1642-1723), who did not hesitate to declare that van Oosterwyck was as talented as van Aelst.
The great care she devoted to the balance of her compositions, combined with her botanical knowledge and the refined symbolism of her paintings, gives her work a remarkable formal power, A Swag of Fruit being a perfect synthesis of these qualities. The painting depicts a richly composed hanging bouquet, intertwining roses, irises, mandarins, pomegranate, peaches, oranges, plums, bunches of grapes, apples, raspberries, walnuts, and even ears of wheat, within which a discreet fauna, spider and butterflies, can be seen. This impressive arrangement is held together by a blue ribbon, a recurring motif in the artist’s work (see for example Christie’s, London, 10 December 2003, lot 33; Bonhams, London, 5 December 2013, lot 84).
