Further Details

A BRONZE FIGURE OF AN ATHLETE HOLDING A VASE, MASSIMILIANO SOLDANI-BENZI (1656-1740)

“Copiate essatam.te dalle statue più celebri, che sieno in questa Città [Firenze]” which translates as "exact copies of the most famous statues in this City (Florence)". This is how Soldani Benzi referred to works commissioned by Joseph Johann Adam, Prince of Liechtenstein (1690-1732). In 1701 this highly talented sculptor created twelve figures after the most celebrated antique sculptures in Florence. These models met with great success and were particularly popular with the British milordi. Concerning the Athlete, Soldani wrote to ask Zamboni, his associate in London, whether he might be able to help dispose of, “a Soldier with a vase in his hands .... after the Antique” (29 July 1723).

The Athlete Holding a Vase was a very faithful replica of the ancient Roman marble in the Medici collection, admired and described in the 16th-century by Vasari (1511-1574). The rectangular base is identical to that of the original now in the Uffizi, Florence, and the position of the vase suggests that the Quentin cast is one of the earliest known examples.
